What is Digital Pollution?

It is the result of an over-consumption of connected objects, of the data used that they imply, of the elements necessary for their manufacture that are recycled very little or not at all. My Webspot has become aware of the importance of its own activity concerning this subject and is readjusting its entire operation.

Indeed, the figures on the environmental impact of digital technology are alarming: in 2018, Digital For The Planet conducted a study in which only 27% of respondents were aware of this concern. On October 22nd, GreenIT rang the bell: the sector accounts for 4.2% of the world's primary energy consumption and emits 3.8% of greenhouse gases.

How to improve?

Everyone can do their bit to limit digital pollution. Raising everyone's awareness is the first step. We have listed some daily actions that can significantly contribute to reducing this environmental impact if you follow them:

Travelling with your webspot:

- Only turn on your webspot when you need it.

- Optimize its use so that you only consume the necessary data.

- Load your webspot at night.

- Choose pick-up/drop-off.

- Take advantage of standard shipping: free and emits less CO2 than express shipping.

The right gestures wherever you are:

- Switch off your device when you are no longer using it.

- Set the power saving and standby mode.

- Turn down the brightness of your screens, better for your eyesight and save money.

- Turn off the light in the room you just left if no one is around.

The processing of your e-mails :

- Delete useless emails (spam, trash).

- Empty your trash.

- Optimize sent files (by compressing them or reducing the resolution of the documents).

- If you spend more than 3 minutes on a digital document, it is more ecological to print it than to open it several times.

- To communicate on your awareness and contribute to these actions, you can use this signature generator for your emails.

Bonus : small tips :

- Download the "EcoFont" software which allows you to reduce ink consumption by 20%, and thus save money. Prefer the still black and white one.

- Use the google extension "Ecosia" which allows you to plant a tree every 50 searches made.
